Oklahoma City is Working Hard to Attract Millennials

The Oklahoma Gazette recently reported on its capital city’s efforts to recruit millennials to live downtown.  City planners and local government officials across the country are working to draw millennials to their cities, since they stimulate local economies.  According to the Gazette, the cities with the fastest growing economies have also seen double digit percentage millennial growth in the past two years (Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Orlando, and Oklahoma City).  Conversely, cities with the biggest economic declines also lost millennials (Detroit, Boston, and Cleveland).

Armed with these statistics, Oklahoma City’s leaders hope walkable neighborhoods and good schools will attract millennials. To this end, they have invested in sidewalks, developed plans to build a streetcar system, funded afterschool programs and student transportation, and nurtured the arts and entertainment scene.
