Smart guns, also know as childproof guns, personalized firearms, or user-authorized handguns, remain a subject of interest since their early development in the mid-1990s. There are no smart guns commercially available in the United States today but a
U.S. Department of Justice study published in June 2013 indicated that two companies are planning to market them in the U.S. this year. The study reviews the safety and state of the technology.
