The
New York Times reports that, effective September 8, 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency prohibits boats from dumping sewage in the New York State waters of Long Island Sound. Connecticut banned such activity for its Long Island Sound waters in 2007. The new ban will require more than 12,000 recreational and small commercial vessels to dispose of their sewage at pump-out stations along the coast. According to the Times, the ban coincides with plans for more action by Connecticut and New York to reduce nitrogen pollution in Long Island Sound.
