The
New York Times recently reported that the nation’s fastest growing cities are those in which housing is more affordable than average (e.g., Raleigh-Durham, NC and Austin, TX). Ten years ago, the opposite was true: the fastest growing cities were those where housing was more expensive than average (e.g., Cape Coral, FL and Riverside, CA). The graphic below shows the fastest growing cities: the larger the circle, the faster their growth and the darker the color, the more affordable their housing.
As the graphic shows, many of the fastest growing cities are in the middle of the country. According to the Times, rising rents and tight mortgage standards are pushing buyers inland, where the cost of living is much lower.
