Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) recently introduced a “National Right to Work” bill in the U.S. Senate. The bill deletes a provision in the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) that allows a union and an employer to agree that union membership or payment of union dues will be a mandatory condition of employment. In effect, the bill would mean the end of “closed shops” nationwide. The NLRA already allows the states to decide the issue for themselves and there are currently 22 “right to work” states in the nation.
